There was a time not long ago, where in a new generation was born. A generation who never played the game when shaman didn’t exist. A generation who had no concept of what a rep grind really meant back in the day. A generation who would have scant chance to ever step foot in Blackwing Lair, Molten Core, Upper Blackrock Spire, or Diremaul. This generation lived to level to 58 and then take their first undergeared steps into Outland. A land rich in gold and gear. A land where undergeared easy to kill toons became monstrous killing machines.
A world…. that has come to an end.
A world, that has become a shadow of its former self.
Like the Age of Azeroth…. The BC Babies era is at an end.
Their scars have been earned.
Their noobdom shed in favor of the ideology of the grizzled veteran.
Enter the Children of Wrath. Its a cool name. You’ve got to admit that its much better than BC Babies, but what will the Children of Wrath have missed? What will the never have seen? What is destined to be their legacy on the world?
A Child of Wrath will have no concept of Outland as a slow leveling zone. Even leveling normally and skipping instances, a Child of Wrath is likely to hit level 68 before they ever leave Terokar forest. A Child of Wrath is likely to have almost never seen, Blades Edge Mountains. A child of Wrath is likely to have never ventured into Netherstorm or Shadowmoon Valley. A Child of Wrath may have no concept of where Tempest Keep is. A child of Wrath will have never danced in the halls of Karazhan by the pale moonlight.
A Child of Wrath will have no concept of a 3 hour Shadow Labs run. They’ll have no concept of instances that take more than an hour to complete. A child of Wrath will have no concept of what it meant to grind through attunement for Karazhan. A child of Wrath will have no concept of endlessly grinding rep in instances over and over without just swapping a tabard and getting different reputation.
A child of Wrath will have no concept of a what day one in Hellfire Peninsula is like. A Child of Wrath will never have lived in a world where the King of Stormwind didn’t sit on the throne. A child of Wrath will never see the duplicity of Onyxia. A Child of Wrath will never have seen Lord Bolovar before stepping foot into Northrend.
Finally a Child of Wrath will live in a world where a level 55 character can be created as soon as they have another level 55 character. It is a brave new world. What other things will a Child of Wrath have missed?
PsychoChris says:
A child of wrath will live in a world where they are not burdened with a common courtesy and word of mouth references to establish their group viability, but rather by a list of mediocre accomplishments and “time sinks” that will be known as “achievements”.
Kadomi says:
Aww, you make me a bit sad. I am a first generation player, and when I recently solo’d Dire Maul for the achievement, I felt so sad that no one experiences the greatness of a Dire Maul tribute run anymore. What a great set of instances.
We recently tried to recapture some of the ‘magic’ of early BC and set foot into Shadow Labs, naked for all but pants and weapons. This took our health, mana and armor right back to where it was when we first entered it. And still, we zerged it, and it didn’t feel as epic as the first time we ever got a look at Murmur.
Galtara says:
I miss Undead Strat the way it was in vanilla WOW, when the first pull into the Gauntlet indicated if you were going to have a smooth run or a long, painful wipe-fest. Those of you who have been there KNOW what I’m talking about. I miss when UBRS felt epic. I miss 40-man raids. I miss attunements for raid instances. I miss feeling like I had EARNED my epic gear. *mutters to herself from her rocker by the fireplace*
Osethme says:
Mmm…undead Strat… “THE LIVING ARE HERE!” “Shit, did someone get it? KILL IT KILL IT!”
The place Galtar stole my dice, and my rolls have never been the same since.
Way back when, a level 60 pushing what? 200 dps? was uber.
But really, I can’t wait to explore!

I love the concept that everyone who’s currently a player is now a veteran.
As a corollary, is experience in the original game even relevant anymore? It’s like a completely different game now.
Thanks for writing this up; great fun.

I remember when I had to walk to Baron uphill both ways. I remember when pallies had 5 min buffs that had to be cast on each toon in the 40 man raid. 10 man raids on Baron or BRD. Then the timer on Baron and thinking it was impossible. Stepping into the Blasted Lands at 1150 st and watching the Gate do absolutely nothing at midnite. Then getting BC and installing it just to get to Honor hold. Fond memories, LOL

Hey, you kids! Get off my lawn!
When I started, several very common terms in BC were almost unknown…
Shadow priest? Pally tank? What are those? Bear tank? Yeah, right, that doesn’t work for anything serious!
The game has changed a lot in the almost 4 years I’ve been playing it, and I expect that to continue. And I look forward to it!
Galtara says:
Oh, I also look forward into poking around Northrend. What I guess you could say I regret is that the people who have started playing since BC came out will never experience some of the things we experienced.
Herc says:
I remember the days when only 10 people were attuned for Onyxia so we had to keep running UBRS over and over and over. I remember when there were less than 10 lvl 60 priest exist in my server =o.
mmmm good old days

Flight paths that didn’t link up! My god that was painful…not for us clicking on a flightpath and going to make a cup of tea…we had to wait and refly at each stop off!
Knowing why getting the Searing Gorge key was worthwhile!
Starman says:
Oh god I remember those days. I remember screaming bloody murder because I couldn’t fly where I wanted because the FP were no where near connected.

You know I was talking about this with a guildie the other night about how everyone in a heroic or 10 man is trying to complete achievements. We were talking about how we remember when we were just happy to down a boss in UBRS or Dire Maul because the bosses were hard. I came to the conclusion that Achievements were either instituted poorly or a game breaking addition. I say game breaking as in the game that most of us know now. everyone before a boss states a desire to try to do the achievement and sometimes the majority wins and we try to do the achievement well at this current gear level we end up wiping several times before we decide we can’t do it. Whatever happened to trying to farm heroics for badges and gear?
