Its catchy.  We talked about creating a guild at one point, with a name like that, but the reality is that it was time to look at clearing out some bags.  We all do it.  We’ve been collecting bags and bags of gear saving them for special fights etc, but at the end of the day, its time to move on.  Those hard earned purples are on the verge of being replaced with easily earned greens.

An era has ended and a new one born again.  But how long should you hold onto those epics?  Should you look at greens sooner than later?  I tend to think so, but for different reason than you think.

Itemization Changes

This isn’t as impactive for everyone, but for some of us, itemization has transformed dramatically in WotLK.  Lets look through some examples from Wowhead.  What’s attached through that link is a listing of every quest in Borean Tundra with a quest reward that includes items.  Take a moment to flip through it.  There’s a lot of similarity between itemization today in Wrath, but for many, there’s some new things to concider.

Lets look at rogues and druids.  Unless you were raiding in Black Temple, Mt. Hyjal and Sunwell, you probably didn’t see much Armor Penetration or haste.  There aren’t a ton of pieces with it, but notice its present on some of the pieces.  The same could be said for casters.  There’s a great deal more haste rating.  We know those will be critical stats moving forward.

So should you hold onto your gear for a while because it “looks” like its better?  Or should you start to learn the new stats that you may not have used before?  I’m very much inclined to lean towards replacing my gear quickly and learning the new stats.  There are plenty of BT people who learned the value of Haste rating, but for those of us who weren’t able to raid with it, knowing what it does and how big of an impact would be good.

I’m not advocating replacing every piece as a new one comes up.  However instead of looking at individual pieces and deciding they don’t look good, look at three or four pieces if you stack them together.  One piece of armor with a haste rating may not be good, but if you find three pieces with haste rating is it worth giving a try?

Either way…. its time to start slimming that gear stash down.  Do your homework and see what’s useful and above all, learn to evaluate new pieces as unique and different from the old.  You may find a trinket that just looks meh on the surface, but really shines when you try it.

Also, that’s some of the fun of leveling in a new expansion just to see what new gear there is. I know there’s some with T6 intending to keep it till near 80, but, I remember the first character from 60-70 being some of the most fun I’ve had in WoW. Yes, I had a lot of fun raiding in BC, but nothing since has quite captured walking into HH and finding Danath, or finding Kargath in Shattered Halls, or my first Outland blue. I hope WotLK will recapture some of that sense of wonder that I had on my first 1-60 in 2005, and taking that same toon to 70 in 2007.

I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised. My time in the beta was constantly filled with wonder and looking around finding new things spotting stuff I never thought I’d see. It was a great experience.

So, my mage has about 215 haste rating (~13%-15%) atm, but never set foor in BT. I think there are a lot of haste items from your high end badge gear and such that will help make the decision to stay in TBC epics a bit longer.

Also, any epics that can be bought w/ gold or badges, cannot be sharded and some can’t even be vendored…sad reality. So you will get almost nothing for discarding the old. Make sure you wait to be sure you are happy with your new gear before discarding the old.

Oh definitely. For me this was a great opportunity to really trim down my stash of 6 differnt gear sets down to like 1.5 sets. It made a huge difference.
